What makes our approach different?

Dot IRL is a realistic alternative to the (.ie) domain extension. It's a free market approach to registering an Irish domain name. Our domain extension is set up under the unifiedroot system, for more information on root systems see this link.

Our registry is in the testing phase at present, however, you can view domains with the .irl extension if your current ISP is resolving the unified root. Check the site at this link: www.test.irl to see if you can resolve our extension. If not see here for more information.

When will it launch

We will launch .irl registration soon, it will be as easy as registering a .com and just as competitive in price. However, a few things have to happen first e.g. ISP recognition etc.

At present discussions are taking place between ICANN, IANA and Unified Root to resolve issues such as   recognition of each body, this should take away some of the confusion about public and privately held TLD's. We will post any relevant articles in our news section.

Why did we choose .irl

There are a few reasons we chose .irl

  • IRL is the internationally recognised abbreviation for Ireland, look at the car stickers when traveling across Europe and and car reg plates here in Ireland.
  • To give more freedom of access to register a domain name to people and companies both home and abroad.
  • To be price competitive.
  • Instant approval if your chosen name is available ...  no need for registered business name or company documentation.
  • DOT.IE means:  'That is'  -  DOT.IRL means IRELAND
